Background

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) covers an expansive area of 7,911 acres and features two concrete runways and a terminal with 20 gates. Considered a medium-sized airport, it ranks highly among other airports regarding customer satisfaction and service quality. Over 7,000,000 passengers travel via this airport annually.

Indicators of an airport's success are its traffic, operational excellence, and level of passenger satisfaction. When processes within an airport break down, the airport loses revenue, and passengers experience delays, cancellations, and confusion. Critical challenges for airport management include unknown people flow, repetitive manual work, occupancy planning, asset location, not knowing if escalators or people movers are operational, current operational information, and safety and security.

Our partner, Senzary, deployed the Senzary SkySmart solution to help JAX transform into a smarter and customer-friendly facility. This is an excellent example of how to go from ZERO visibility to the ability to coordinate resources in various aspects. In fact, when the Jacksonville Airport Authority launched a public bid earlier this year—for which Senzary was awarded the project—it was only for air quality monitoring. However, upon learning the potential of IoT solutions and the capability of Senzary, they quickly expanded the contract to cover the entirety of the airport across several areas and use cases, namely door controls, passenger experience, predictive maintenance, equipment utilization monitoring, people flows and dwelling, the baggage management system improvement and reporting and analytics about performance insights.

For airports to be certified as SAFE, they need to have this monitoring solution in place.

Also, in the USA, the FAA grants are focused on other things, such as safety and environmental well-being.

Challenges

Unclear Traffic with Ambiguous Usage Level

A top passenger complaint is that clean & well-stocked restrooms are unavailable. Before boarding or after deplaning, many passengers use the restroom nearest their gate and are frustrated if they must walk a distance to alternative facilities. Custodians were scheduled to clean restrooms periodically, but that schedule was not based on real-time usage data. Airport management also could not verify when custodians completed their cleaning tasks. Furthermore, the custodians arbitrarily chose time windows for cleaning, which coincided with the passengers' peak affluence, adding to the grief of passengers.

Low Customer Satisfactory with Bad Air Quality

Another critical factor influencing passenger satisfaction is the quality of the indoor environment, which is primarily determined by the effectiveness of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Traditionally, these systems operate on pre-set schedules that lack the flexibility to adapt to real-time conditions. This rigid approach often results in suboptimal performance, which includes a lack of responsiveness, inefficient energy use, inconsistent comfort levels, and missed opportunities for optimization.

With advanced AI, the VS125 is able to immediately detect and identify tailgating in any scenarios, suitable for entrances and exits that needs card tapping or swiping. This will effectively reduce cases like card piggybacking.

By implementing Senzary SkySmart solutions and using Milesight sensors, our partner generates information that allows the airport to adjust HVAC systems based on occupancy patterns and environmental measurements, and therefore reduce energy costs and improve comfort.

Our partner's comprehensive solution includes Milesight sensors that monitor people flow, indoor air quality, odor levels in closets, and open-door sensors. In addition, there are other sensors from the Senzary portfolio, such as energy monitoring and predictive maintenance that aggregate all the information from motors, baggage systems, and other areas.

Improved User Experience with Smart Restroom

With Milesight products, the facility managers can coordinate janitorial resources based on restroom utilization. Following a data-driven schedule rather than a fixed schedule can save many labor hours per year. Even better, cleaning can be scheduled when the traffic is thinner, avoiding inconveniencing passengers unnecessarily. In practice, facility managers can determine cleaning schedules based on two factors: first, foot traffic/hour/restroom, and second, not to clean during peak hours. Improve overall cleaning efficiency and user experience.

The Milesight VS350 Passage People Counter monitors restroom use by accurately sensing a person each time a large object passes in front of it. This data is transmitted to a LoRaWAN® gateway, which routes it through Senzary IoTLogIQ middleware for processing and integration with external systems. Thresholds are set based on the area of the airport, and the Senzary SkySmart IoTLogIQ middleware will alert staff if the cleaning threshold has been reached via a webpage or mobile app and schedule a cleaning. The Senzary Analytics board also uses this information to showcase cleaning opportunities based on hourly traffic on any given day since patterns fluctuate during the week, instead of foxed schedules, usually colliding with high traffic situations, inconveniencing passengers.

From here, custodial management can know if the cleaning threshold has been reached via a webpage or mobile app and schedule a cleaning.

To further maximize the effectiveness of the cleaning staff, Senzary installed the Milesight GS301 Bathroom Odor Detector measures the concentration of foul gases, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, in real-time. When ammonia or hydrogen sulfide concentration reaches thresholds, the alarm will be activated, including a traffic light indicator, built-in buzzer and uplink data packets.

Better Indoor Air Quality with Smart HVAC System

The Milesight AM308L 8-in-1 IAQ Sensor measures temperature, humidity, light, CO2 concentration, TVOC, barometric pressure, PM2.5, PM10, and motion. This data is transmitted to a LoRaWAN® gateway, which then routes it through Senzary IoTLogIQ middleware for processing and integration with external systems. This data can alert staff to readings outside the normal ranges so that they can adjust the HVAC system, controlling high humidity and mismatches between the traffic of people on the terminal and the utilization of the HVAC system.

For example, when Hurricane Debby went through Jacksonville, the sensors in the JAX ticketing areas indicated high levels of humidity, and the indicators created a VENTILATORS ON alert. Staff could then adjust the HVAC and bring the humidity from 90% + to a more normal level, and turn off the coolers, since the temperature was considerably lower. By creating a more comfortable environment in the ticketing areas, passengers experience real-time improvements and JAX saved the equivalent of 48 hours of energy cost.
